One of the new initiatives of the Department of Agriculture (it started on 1 July 2014) is an income support payment aimed specifically at farmers and their partners. Called the Farm Household Allowance (FHA).
Details are available online at humanservices.gov.au and eligible farmers are required to have a Farm Financial Assessment (FFA) completed by a prescribed adviser. Up to $1500 is available to cover the cost of this assessment, and this can be paid directly to the adviser once the FFA is approved.
This is only one of a number of government assistance packages available to farm families, farm businesses and others in rural communities experiencing hardship. The website agriculture.gov.au/assistance provides more detail and encourages farmers and other rural businesses to seek assistance from qualified professionals.
